FOR_LARRY.exe is an installation that attempts to archive the flight of Larry Walters, who, in 1982, used a lawn chair and weather balloons to fly himself across the Mojave Desert. In its mythologised state found within internet archives, the event is dislocated from its objective truth to make way for the irreverence, whimsy, and tragedy at its core. The archive, taking the form of a video game, is a means of exploring the material translations that take place during the process of archivisation, and the impact this has on the fidelity of its information. The viewer takes on the role of witness as they experience the digital embodiment of this event, verifying its elusive and poetic truth against the actualisation of its presence. An archive of the imperfect flight of an unlucky man, who, against all odds, achieved his dream of flight. A man who was so stupefied by the beauty of the landscape below him that he packed a camera and never used it. A man who never recovered from his debt, or who never married. A man who took his own life at 44. A man who, upon his arrest after crash landing, was quoted as saying, “a man can’t just sit around…”.
